what exactly does a family photo session include, and what should families expect?
i dont want you to have any suprises when you book with me, so here i will give you the low down on what to expect!
i always feel so very humbled when a family books me to take their precious family photos. it is such an honour to be trusted with capturing that very point in a families life. i love to showcase to you just how beautiful your family is, through an array of different images, so that you can pick a collection that tells your story. it makes me so happy to be able to hand over something tangible.
for this blog, i have used my own kids, to demonstrate exactly what you can expect when you book with me.
my aim when i am spending time with your family, is to do two things.
1. the first thing i aim to do, is to capture high quality images of your family just doing your thing - really candid, in the moment type shots. the reasons why i do this for my families is:
a) it is a break from the candid moments mum and dad are capturing with their iphone or family camera which can sometimes be in low resolution - due to the professional images being high resolution, they will print so much better than phone photos.
b) they are real, and they are the moments you want to remember. you want a memory that evokes a feeling, even if you dont know it at the time of the shoot. photoshoots are such happy times, and getting these candid shots will be family moments you will look back on fondly forever.
if this kind of candid-ness worries you as you are quite shy, please don't fret - because although it will look VERY candid, I will have told you exactly where to stand, where to look, whether to smile, kiss, whatever it is we are trying to achieve.
i want to hand you a bundle of images where you are so lost in your family, that its hard to imagine someone else was actually there capturing those moments.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE - those beautiful pictures you see of families seemlessly frolicking through feilds, i can guarantee are not seemless at all. candid shots still take ALOT of direction, so dont feel shy at all, i am not asking you to be a natural "frollicker" in order to have nice images... i will tell you exactly what you need to do!!
EG. in the below image, i asked my daughter to turn on her side, with her face slightly pointed to me. then i asked her to look down at the forest floor for fairies. she had the best time, and i got the best images - images that look very natural and candid and as if there would have been no direction given.

from there, i was able to tell her to look at me without moving her body, just her head, and i got the "money shot." i will go further into the "money shot" soon!
and truly, trust me, the magic happens when the kids dont think the woman with the camera is forcing them to smile... here are some more from the same series when i specifically told her not to look at me, and instead spin and walk and look around.
2. my second aim for your shoot is to ensure i grab the "money shot" of the family unit, as well as all the individual members of the family... you know, the portraits you print off and frame for grandma. these portraits are priceless and a really beautiful thing to have, so i will always ensure you get a bundle of these also.

using my own kids, here is an example of the types of images i love to capture at one shoot, and therefore, what you can expect the candid aspect of your collection to look like.
i have done extensive training on both family photography, and in working with photoshop and lightroom and i have developed a clear style that is unique to me.
below are a few examples from our shoot of straight out of the camera vs once edited by me, to show exactly what type of editing you can expect.
